New RoHS Laws on the Horizon:(EU) 2015/863 Goes Into Effect In July

Most people working in the electronics industry are at least somewhat familiar with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive, or RoHS. RoHS is an evolving piece of European legislation that aims to protect electronics consumers from chemical substances known to detriment human health. The first RoHS directive was adopted by the EU in 2003, but quite a bit has happened since that time. The most notable changes, brought forth by Directive (EU) 2015/863, go into effect officially on July 22, 2019. This months technical bulletin features a brief history of the evolution of the RoHS directives, offers some insight into the reasons for chemical restrictions, and identifies relevant industry implications of the upcoming directive effectivity.
